Today Was Beautiful.

Today was beautiful,
it was the type of day that you can only enjoy
by eating a pistachio cone from Ray's Candy Store
and watching the pups
at the Tompkin's Square dog run
the shih tzus, bull dogs
or sitting on a tire swing at the back of the park
spinning, rocking, catching the ice cream drippings
before they slip onto your fingers
or sitting on the small hill
eating a Chocolate, or even better, a banana crunch Entenmann's cake,
preferably without utensils
with a side of green grapes
there was even a sun shower,
and I wish I was on Avenue A to enjoy it
I would stand at the bus stop
under the glass canopy
and watch the slinky buses go by
and the boys on their skateboards
and the girls on their bikes with baskets
and people eating slices of pizza on the go
and I would be happy.

Spring Has Sprung

This weekend was a breakthrough
both on my tan and other important matters
I did not let my nostalgia or homesickness rule
I broke out of the norm,
no more egg white omelets and multigrain toast
I've moved onto scrambled eggs and cheese on an English muffin,
but that wasn't the revolution of this weekend
everything was beautiful,
maybe because I abandoned all my papers and readings and priorities
for blue skies, sandals and a sunny hilltop by Sunset Lake
and for once it felt good not to be in the city
to be away from the movement and
the sounds
(besides the sweet soul sounds of Robin Thicke)
I dearly miss the pigeons,
but I was ok trading them for the robins that would hop around in the grass
sounding like footsteps and awakening me from my sunny slumber
or the occasionally blue jay or cardinal sighting
(and I was overjoyed to see a woodpecker, a real, live woodpecker!!!)
I couldn't hear the hum of car engines or the rumble of subways on old tracks
but I could hear geese overhead and the occasional bee buzzing (quite frightening)
some good ol Vitamin D and combo of UVA UVB made me feel like
I took a short trip to Miami
Spring, you have done a great thing for me and my tan
I am sincerely grateful.

This is What I Live For

This fateful Friday I finally got to leave Poughkeepsie
and it felt so good
midterms week was so oppressive
all I did was sit in various library cubicles
staring at the walls
and listening to Robin Thicke to get me by
while my roommate overdosed on caffeine
literally, she said her teeth were buzzing
which worries me a bit
but enough with that
because Vassar seems like just a distant memory
still covered in snow
so for now I'll just pretend that I'll be in the city forever
not for just 2 more weeks
it's actually spring here
and I'm storing the snow boots
and my winter jacket away
hello leather jacket,
sweet thing, how I've missed you
I traded in the library cubicle
for the park benches at Tompkin's
watching pups in the dog run (and sane squirrels)
I saw the cutest bulldog
a chubby, scrumptious little thing
that looked like a roll of sugar cookie dough
pups help past the time when you're waiting 2 hours
to get a coveted seat in
the Clinton Street Baking Company
for the best blueberry pancakes ever (more on that later)
so the wait was productive,
I finally got to take in my neighborhood(s)
while the sun was shining
perfect weather for an iced coffee
and a long walk
so here are some pictures I took
because one of the best things about the city
is the street art, the graffiti, the murals

this is one of my favorite ever
an amalgamation of everything about the city that I love

the Lower East Side is the most beautiful place in the entire world
no matter what anyone says
I'm a sucker for any tag in pink

so long drab brick buildings of Vassar
I get so sick of staring out my window onto the quad
where everything looks the same
where nothing is colorful
where the extent of history isn't just some
tall tales about Jane Fonda
I just wish I could stay here forever
where there's a bodega on every corner
and a photo op on every block
and I don't have to wait for a shuttle to go to the supermarket
where the extent of my walk isn't to
English class
where there are pigeons and buses
and different types of people (this is probably the most refreshing thing about being back)
for the next two weeks
me and my leather jacket
are going to take on the world
(because the Lower East Side is definitely the center of the world).

Wishing for Spring

Today when I woke up
it was 10 degrees,
10 sad, sad degrees
so I was forced to wear my boyfriend's itchy gray cardigan
I shouldn't complain
since I quite like it,
minus the prickly feeling it gives me on my tummy,
but the quad looked like the tundra today
and my hat flattens my bangs down
so they jut out
over my eyes;
I just found an eyelash on my keyboard
a real eyelash, surprisingly not covered in any mascara
I never wish on the mascara covered ones
they just don't seem pure enough to be lucky
to have that wish granting power, you know?
anyhow, this eyelash that I just blew off the tip of my finger
made me feel a bit better about the weather
if it was a realistic wish, I would have wished for spring
for spring to come right now
so I could wake up, look out my window at the bright green grass
and whip out those open toe shoes once again
for they have been collecting dust in their boxes
I can't wait for spring to finally arrive
so I can eat strawberries
in every way, because I realized that I truly take them for granted
seeing as I haven't had them in months
I'll eat them covered in chocolate and cake icing,
sliced up in my Honey Bunches of Oats in the morning
in their natural state still dewy from being washed as I do my Sociology readings
chopped up in a fruit medley
the possibilities are endless
fruit salad sounds so nice to me right now
just the way my mom used to make it when I was young
sliced apples, crisp
bright green kiwi rounds and sweet pear bit hiding behind juicy orange slices
I'd like to fix myself a bowl of fruit salad
and sit out in the grass and attempt to read
I'd probably spend most of my time brushing the ants off my legs
nevertheless I'd be happy
if spring would just come a bit quicker.
